About
The INHS Stream Ecology Lab focuses on research into the relationships between Illinois streams, rivers, and the living systems they support. The lab’s goal is to enhance scientific understanding of aquatic organisms in flowing waters and how environmental conditions affect their distribution and interactions across Illinois.
Research conducted by the lab’s dedicated personnel focuses on freshwater mussels, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish to address long-standing ecological questions and support practical decision-making for conservation, resource management, and policy. Summaries of individual studies and projects are available in the Research section.
People
The Stream Ecology Lab is supported by researchers, staff, collaborators, and former members with experience in ecology, conservation, and applied resource management.
In the Directory, you will find our current lab members and their contact information.
Locations
The lab works from two main locations in Illinois: Champaign and Springfield.

Continuing Legacy
Located in Illinois’ Vermilion County, Jordan Creek has been the subject of continuous stream research since the early 1950s. Few stream systems in the state have been examined with such consistency over such a long period, making Jordan Creek a valuable reference for understanding ecological change.
The creek’s history of resilient research continues through the Dr. R.W. Larimore Stream Ecology Internship, which supports undergraduate research on Jordan Creek and related river systems. This generous contribution to the lab memorializes Dr. Larimore’s commitment to field-based science and mentorship, while maintaining an active role for students in ongoing stream research.
